Program of Study
The goal of the Allegany Faithkeepers School is to preserve the Seneca language, culture and traditions. To accomplish this goal the following program objectives are followed:
· Seneca Language In The Classroom
Students begin learning the basic ancient Seneca Thanksgiving Address and conversational Seneca at age six years old. This speech of thanksgiving is taught in a simplified form; outlining the many creations given to mankind from the Creator. Students, ages eleven to sixteen, learn a more complex Thanksgiving Address utilizing more of the Seneca language to express this gratitude. All students learn, review and participate through speeches, dance and songs honoring the cycles of celebration at the Coldspring Longhouse. Community elders interact with the students as Seneca language teachers and motivators.
· Seneca Culture
All students receive daily instruction in their future role as spiritual leaders in the longhouse community. Instruction includes proper behavior, respect and understanding of the distinct culture of the Seneca people. Students interact with the Seneca community elders, learning love, respect and caring for these national treasures. Students are also exposed to Seneca arts and crafts and the proper manufacture and uses of these materials.
· Seneca Traditions
All students are taught the rich history of the Seneca people through lectures, books and films which portray the positive contributions of the Seneca ancestors. Members of the Seneca community participate through visiting, talking and encouraging the development of the Faithkeeper students. Students receive an understanding of their future role in preserving the Seneca identity into the next Seven Generations.
